May 2014
Gentlemen of the Society:
After suffering through a historically bad winter season, it appears a pleasant spring has arrived. The final snow of April 16 has melted.Cabin fever has been eradicated. This encourages us to get out and spend time with family and friends in the pleasant warm days ahead. We hope to fill some of your leisure time with some interesting events this spring and into the summer.
Attached is your invitation to the Past Presidents Dinner which you may print. There will also be copies at the May 8th meeting. Take advantage of the early bird price by sending your reservation and check before the posted deadline. The 2014 Robert Tunnicliffe Foundation award will be presented to Allyson Crawley Duncan.
At the conclusion Past President’s Dinner, I would like to have a current picture taken of all the Past Presidents and Executive Committee Members to update the picture on the Web Site.
Many thanks to Bill Bruce who performs the duties of House Manager. He truly is the “eyes” and “ears” of the Society ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the Rooms. His attention to details through periodic inspection of the rooms is greatly appreciated.Bill is also a member of the Board of Managers and on the Audit Committee. We salute you Bill!
There is a nice framed portrait picture of Bob Tunnicliffe on the mantle in the front parlor. Thanks to Bill Burke for this fine contribution.
The First Annual Garden Gala will be Friday, June 13.Thanks to Jim McPhee and the Garden Committee members for planning and sponsoring this event.Don’t be superstitious because of the date.No black cats or ladders, please! Please see up-coming events for details.Jim spent the day working in the Garden on Thursday, April 14.
Members Frank Alquire, Rich Hixon, Bill Burke, Jay Higle and I were honored to represent the Society at the New York City Tartan Day Parade on May 5.Frank and Rich carried our banner with the SAS NY City at the front of the mile long parade. The parade included many pipe bands, Celtic dancers, Scottish Societies, members of the Scottish Parliament, Scotty dogs and more.In the evening we attended the spectacular three hour New York Tattoo.Master of ceremonies was SAS NY President Samuel F. Abernethy.Next year we are going to register and hope to have a larger contingency of members.Next year, we could take a bus down and the train back. Thanks to Jay Higle and Kathy, Bill Burke and Catherine and Rich Hixon for organizing the trip. It was truly fun!
On a more serious subject, many members have not paid their 2014 dues.Statements were sent out early in November 2013.It is time consuming and a cost burden on the Society to keep sending out repeated notices to the same members who are continually delinquent. Please be responsible members. If you have mitigating circumstances and are unable to pay, please let us know.
Saturday, May 3 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm a Spring Clean-up Day will be held in the ROOMS.The House Committee and Garden Committee request your presence! There are many small tasks anyone can tackle! An email was sent out. Please contact House Committee Chairperson Dick Powell at 577-6363 cell or aphowell@aol.com and/or Garden Committee Chairperson James McPhee at 428-8102 or jmcphee@nycap.rr.com for details.
The House Committee will also be scheduling work projects that members can volunteer to complete as individuals work at their own convenience. This will be posted on the members section of the web site and in the Rooms.
Aye yours,
Pat
